When it comes to precision rifles, the Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) in 6.5 Creedmoor stands out as a game-changer. Whether you’re a long-range shooting enthusiast or a tactical shooter, this rifle offers a blend of modularity, accuracy, and affordability that’s hard to beat. Let’s dive into the details and explore what makes this rifle a favorite among shooters.

What is the Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor?

The Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) is a bolt-action rifle designed for long-range precision shooting. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, it’s known for its exceptional accuracy, modular design, and user-friendly features. Since its introduction in 2015, the RPR has become a staple in the precision shooting community, thanks to its innovative design and competitive pricing.

Key Features of the Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor

1. Barrel: Precision Engineered for Long-Range Shooting

The RPR features a 24-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with 5R rifling, ensuring minimal bore distortion and maximum accuracy. The heavy contour (.850″ at the muzzle) and a Ruger Precision Rifle muzzle brake reduce recoil and muzzle blast, making it easier to stay on target for follow-up shots.

User Experience:

  • The barrel feels solid and well-balanced, even during extended shooting sessions.
  • The muzzle brake effectively reduces recoil, making it comfortable to shoot, even for beginners.

2. Bolt Action: Smooth and Reliable

ruger precision 6.5 creedmoor

The RPR’s three-lug bolt with a 70° throw ensures smooth operation. The bolt is DLC-coated for corrosion resistance and durability, and the oversized bolt handle provides positive manipulation, even in adverse conditions.

User Experience:

  • The bolt action is smooth, with minimal grit, especially after a bit of lubrication.
  • The oversized handle makes it easy to operate, even with gloves on.

3. Magazine: Versatile and High-Capacity

The RPR uses a patented multi-magazine interface, compatible with AICS and Magpul-style magazines. It comes with two 10-round Magpul PMAG magazines, offering ample capacity for precision shooting sessions.

User Experience:

  • Magazine changes are quick and seamless, thanks to the flared magwell design.
  • The 10-round capacity is perfect for competitive shooting or extended range sessions.

4. Recoil Management: Built for Comfort

ruger precision 6.5 creedmoor

The in-line recoil path directs recoil straight back into the buttstock, minimizing muzzle rise and improving accuracy. Combined with the muzzle brake, the RPR’s recoil is surprisingly mild for a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle.

User Experience:

  • Recoil is manageable, even during rapid-fire drills.
  • The soft rubber buttpad adds comfort, especially during long shooting sessions.

5. Secure Grip: Designed for All Hand Sizes

The Magpul MOE-K2+ grip offers a more vertical grip angle, providing better control and comfort. The rubber overmolding ensures a secure grip, even in wet or slippery conditions.

User Experience:

  • The grip feels natural and ergonomic, accommodating a wide range of hand sizes.
  • The rubber texture provides a firm hold, reducing fatigue during extended use.

6. Adjustable Stock: Customizable for Every Shooter

The RPR features a folding, adjustable stock with customizable length-of-pull, cheek rest height, and buttpad height. The stock folds to reduce the rifle’s overall length for easier transport.

User Experience:

  • Adjustments are tool-free and intuitive, allowing for quick customization.
  • The folding mechanism is robust, with no wobble or play when locked in place.

7. Accessory Rail: Ready for Upgrades

ruger precision 6.5 creedmoor

The 20 MOA Picatinny rail on the receiver provides ample space for mounting long-range scopes. The handguard features M-LOK slots for attaching bipods, lights, or other accessories.

User Experience:

  • The rail system is solid, with no flex or movement, even under heavy use.
  • The M-LOK slots make it easy to customize the rifle for different shooting scenarios.

Performance and Accuracy

The RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor is a tack driver, capable of sub-MOA accuracy at long distances. Testers have reported groups as tight as 0.33 inches at 100 yards with factory ammo, making it a top choice for competitive shooters and hunters alike.

Shooting Distance Range:

  • Effective range: Up to 1,000 yards and beyond.
  • The 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge excels at long-range shooting, with minimal bullet drop and wind drift.

Weight and Portability

ruger precision 6.5 creedmoor

The RPR weighs 12.5 pounds, making it slightly heavier than some competitors. However, the weight contributes to its stability and accuracy. The folding stock reduces its overall length to 35.6 inches, making it easier to transport.

Is the Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor Good for Concealed Carry?

While the RPR is a precision rifle designed for long-range shooting, it’s not suitable for concealed carry due to its size and weight. For concealed carry, consider a compact pistol like the Sig Sauer P365, which is specifically designed for everyday carry.

Final Thoughts

The Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5 Creedmoor is a versatile, accurate, and affordable option for anyone serious about long-range shooting. Its modular design, user-friendly features, and exceptional performance make it a standout choice in the precision rifle market. Whether you’re a competitive shooter or a long-range enthusiast, the RPR is sure to impress.

Ruger 6.5 RPR is a beast! I have successfully hunted hogs with a Ruger AR 556 for several years. However I felt the .556 lacks the knockdown power I was looking for. I purchased the RPR in 6.5 Creedmore to give me this. I have not been disappointed! The rifle consistently groups at sub MOA and provides the power to put a hog down and keep him down with a single shot. The trigger pull is a short and crisp 2.5 pounds. Recoil is negligible. The only negative that I find is the weight. After adding a infrared scope and illuminator you will definitely want to add a comfortable carry strap.

Awesome rifle This rifle will hang with competition rifles at a budget price. Trigger could be smoother and it is a tad on the heavy side but shoots tight and almost no recoil out of the box.

EXTREMELY ACCURATE! Only took 9 shots to zero the gun. Final group at 100 yds using Nosler 120 gr. Ballistic Tip with a Sightron 6-24x50 mm scope was 5/8”

I gave Ruger 4 stars because I have not yet had a chance to test it. However the purchase process was easy and fairly quick. The Ruger seems well made and heavy. Looking forward to add optics, put some rounds thru it, and sight it in.
